Kate is thrilled to be the Fashion Partner for the Lolly’s Locks event! Like many people, she has a very personal connection to cancer. When Kate was just 6 years old, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She watched her mother deal with losing her hair during chemotherapy after her mastectomy. Although at the time, Kate did not realize the impact of what was happening, as she got older, she came to understand how serious the situation was. Years later, Kate’s mother had shared how difficult it was to find a wig that looked realistic and yet affordable. At that time, insurance was not covering wigs. After visiting 3 different wig stores, a friend had suggested that she look where “dancers” get their wigs! Her mother is a breast cancer survivor …. 19 years this summer! Kate lost her Aunt Marlo (her mother’s sister) to ovarian cancer in 2000.
Kate’s introduction to the fashion world was actually to benefit a cancer based charity, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In her senior year of high school, she designed a gown made of tiny breast cancer ribbons. In exchange for donations to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Kate placed the names of breast cancer survivors on the tiny ribbons, memorializing those who had passed with dark pink ribbons and those who were survivors with light pink ribbons.
